Hand-picked safety #1 – Friday 19 July, 2024

Hey there ๐Ÿ‘‹,

Marketers use the term “grudge purchase” to describe buying something necessary but not fun.

Things like:

  • ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ผinsurance
  • ๐Ÿฆท going to the dentist
  • ๐Ÿš— servicing a car

Necessary and sometimes life-saving, but we’d rather spend our time and attention elsewhere.

Safety is a grudge purchase. If you need a demonstration, ask for a volunteer fire warden and watch what happens to people’s body language.

There’s plenty of safety experts, research, legislation and data on incidents available (and don’t get us wrong, these are important) but less on how to actually engage with people.

And a message that doesn’t get through is as effective as a blow-up dart board. ๐ŸŽฏ

If you’re the one “selling” safety, and need to get your message heard, we can help.

Each week, we’ll share with you the best of what’s going on in safety to keep you inspired and challenged in your safety role.

Why isn’t safety funny?

Humour gets us to payย attention. And to share.

I’ve spent months researching safety content, community, and experiences and humour rarely gets used in Safety.

New Zealand seems to be one of the exceptions – here are a couple of my favourite examples:

NZ Ghost Chips

Air New Zealand

Is humour just too risky for most safety cultures? We’d love to hear from if you have an experience using humour to make safety more engaging. Just reply to this email.

Preston Wood My Big Safety Challenge Podcast

Why it’s worthwhile: Wood works in an interesting space and is upfront about the mistakes he’s made and the lessons he learned from them.

“If I had had 10,15,20 years’ experience would I have done things differently? โ€ฆI came in wanting to be the expertโ€ฆI can come in and hit the ground running, and I tried to be that subject matter expert right away and it just failed. ย I had to take a step back, let my ego lose a little bit and start asking those questions….there was so much I didn’t know!”
