Hand-picked safety #3 – Friday 9 August, 2024

Hey there ๐Ÿ‘‹,

It took me embarrassingly long in my career to figure out how hard change is without the urgency of emergency. (I also thought everyone came to work to their very best work – Pollyanna anyone?).

The reality is: our brains hate change.

It’s why, even when we’re presented with a better alternative, we naturally stick with what we know.

And trying to change a mindset or culture about safety, when safety is already a grudge purchase, can seem like an insurmountable task.

Wherever the resistance to change is – yourself, your stakeholders, your peers, or your organisation – breaking things down to the smallest practical action can be an effective approach.

Josh Bryant, General Manager – People, Risk (HSE) and Sustainability, gives great insight into how he brought this approach to his workplace, Mitchell Services, through “100 small things”. Check out his presentation.(*Mildy NSFW; swearing).
