Hand-picked safety #9 – Friday 27 September, 2024

Hey there ๐Ÿ‘‹,

Without overthinking, jot down three events from this week.

Did you list three successes or three setbacks?

If your three things were negative, don’t worry, that just makes you human!

Our brains are wired to recall negative experiences more readily than positive ones. (Learn more about the biologyย here)

Working as a safety professional can be “professionally lonely” and it’s easy to get caught it the negative of how challenging an environment it can be.

Safety is often seen as policing people’s behaviours and covering the respective bums of the organisation rather than protecting the workers.

But the majority of safety professionals I’ve met and genuinely motivated by protecting people and keeping them safe at work.

It can be hard to see is the positive progress you have made unless you look for it. When you’re in a role that is skewed to focus on the negative, you have to work harder to find good stuff.

Here’s a challenge for the next week – everyday make note of one good thing that happened.

Use that as fueled to keep your passion for safety alive.

I’d love to hear from you with what good things happened!

Libby & the SafetySocial team.

What We’re Loving This Week

Hunting the Good Stuff

Check out this example of structure hunting the good stuff from @Bridget Jelley.ย

It’s a great example of two things:

  1. Giving people a mechanic and nudge to hunt the good stuff.
  2. We’re pretty focused on safety posters at the moment (#SafetyBreakfastClub) and this showcases how to do a poster wellโ€”it’s eye-catching, it gives a clear instruction on what to do, and easy to understand.ย
