Hey there ๐,
This week, I relistened to an old episode from the podcast “The Safety of Work,” where hosts David Provan and Drew Ray delve into why people sometimes break rules.
The entire episode is packed with valuable insights, but one comment from Ray particularly resonated with me.
He shared his fondness for a unique safety exercise: spending extended periods in a car with colleagues. Ray observed that the discussions that unfold after sharing half a day in a car are markedly different and more open than those in the typical interview-style settings.
This point serves as a powerful reminder of the unconventional yet effective ways to gain deeper insights into workplace safety.
Understanding the dynamics of safety at your organisation doesn’t always require formal tools like surveys.
Sometimes, simply sharing a car ride, attending a team meeting outside your usual group, or participating in a social work event can provide profound insights into others’ perspectives and safety challenges.
These informal interactions are invaluable for fostering a comprehensive understanding of the safety culture across your company.
I’d love to hear how you go if you try something new this week!

Embrace the 1%
Weโve hit week 42 of the yearโonly 10 weeks remain in 2024!
Thatโs 10 weeks to embrace the chance to improve by 1% each week.
Love this video that highlights how small, consistent steps can lead to significant progress. Especially at this time of year when taking on something big might seem unachievable.
